The demolition of the John O Gaunt pub in Sheffield is set to go ahead as part of regeneration of the Gleadless Valley.

As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service in August, the pub on Blackstock Road is scheduled for demolition as part of the newly-relaunched Vision for the Valley regeneration scheme. The pub has been closed since 2022 and an arson attack the following year caused damage and flooding.

The overarching Vision for the Valley is set for approval at tomorrow’s strategy and resources policy committee (December 10).

The plan, which was originally launched in 2018 then delayed, involves building around 1,100 new homes and upgrades to hundreds more, three new or improved community centres and local hubs, four new or improved parks, cleaner, safer streets and better public transport.

There will also be support for residents to find jobs, apprenticeships and training.

Sheffield City Council’s finance and performance policy committee next Monday (December 15) is being asked to sign off on spending £100,000 on the demolition work. The final costs have been confirmed at £72,300 less than was originally budgeted.

A report to the committee says: “The building has remained vacant for some time and has fallen into a poor state of repair, with visible signs of deterioration, vandalism and general neglect.

“Its current structure and condition make it unsuitable for future use without significant investment.

“Given the plans for regeneration in the Gleadless Valley area, there is a desire to avoid disused/derelict buildings which can attract anti-social behaviour/vandalism and associated costs to council budgets.”

The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Board, which is overseeing the Vision for the Valley, approved the demolition in June.
