South Yorkshire's hospitality industry could end up 'crippled' by the upcoming autumn budget

That's unless the Chancellor shows the sector some 'leeway' later this month - according to those working in pubs and bars in the region

South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire's hospitality industry wants the government to provide the sector with the 'shot in the arm it needs'.

Pub bosses are campaigning at Westminster today - as they call for measures to benefit them in the upcoming autumn budget.

Nick Simmonite runs the Frog & Parrott pub in Sheffield City Centre:

"My peer group will be down in Westminster trying to put some pressure on the Chancellor, and rightly so.

"The hospitality industry provides jobs for people - so, to see national insurance contributions on the employers side go up with a bang like it has, along with the national minimum wage increasing - it all costs.

"They need to reform business rates and get it right once and for all.

"They went up far too much this year. VAT really needs to come down in licenced premises.

"It's crippling the high street; not just the hospitality industry.

"Let's get people out, let's get them moving around, and let's get them spending.

"If we get a sense of fairness and balance from the government in this year's autumn budget, then we might just about survive for another year.

"When people feel good about their bank accounts, we tend to do okay.

"We've had some challenges this year though as an industry; national insurance contributions on the employers side going up have really bitten us."

The Chancellor - Rachel Reeves - will deliver the budget later this month.
