Plans to combine seven Alhambra shop units to expand Barnsley’s Health on the High Street

Plans have been submitted to expand Barnsley’s Health on the High Street hub by converting seven retail units in the Alhambra shopping centre into a larger healthcare facility.
The application would combine units 28 to 34 on the first floor into a single unit to house services provided by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Planning documents say the development forms the next phase of the Health on the High Street programme, which has already brought NHS outpatient services into the Alhambra shopping centre. The new space would provide consultation rooms, reception and waiting areas, staff facilities and a plant room.
The existing shopfronts would remain, with any changes to the frontage forming part of a separate application.
The council says the expansion will bring together the trust’s services in one accessible town centre location alongside the existing NHS facilities. Most appointments would be pre-booked, although some drop-in sessions are also planned.
Planning documents say the wider Health on the High Street programme is intended to move more outpatient care away from Barnsley Hospital while supporting the town centre. The Alhambra scheme will also include additional health and wellbeing services and a gym operated by Barnsley Premier Leisure.
Residents can comment on the plans until July 30.
