Man arrested and investigation underway after gun fired in Barnsley
Police were called to the Jump area earlier this week
Police have launched an investigation following reports of a gun being fired in Barnsley.
Officers were called at 9.45pm on Wednesday after damage was reported at a property on Cemetery Road, in the Jump area.
Firearms officers attended the scene and confirmed the damage had been caused by gunfire.
A 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.
No injuries have been reported, but police patrols have been stepped up in the area since.
Detective Inspector Claire Moss of South Yorkshire Police said:
"Since this incident was reported to us, officers, detectives and forensic teams have been working intensively to find those responsible.
"Criminals who carry and fire illegal weapons threaten the safety of our communities, and although no one has been reported injured in this particular incident, the outcome could have been very different.
"Firearms discharges put innocent people at immediate risk, and we will not tolerate it in South Yorkshire.
"Every time someone pulls a trigger, people's lives are in danger, and we will relentlessly pursue anyone using a firearm to cause harm in South Yorkshire.
"We are determined to track down those responsible and bring them to justice, but we cannot do this alone and we need information from the public.
“I want to thank those in the local community who have already supported our enquiries. If you know something and have not yet spoken to us, I urge you to come forward. The information you provide can help us remove dangerous individuals from our streets and prevent further harm.”
