A former South Yorkshire police officer has been jailed for a second time after sending inappropriate messages to a victim of crime.

In February 2025, Stuart Trentham was handed a nine-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to wilful misconduct / wilfully neglecting to perform his duty as a holder of a public office.

This came after he sent flirtatious and sexualised messages in August 2022 to a victim he had come into contact with as part of a case he had previously investigated.

Following his guilty plea in October 2024, we received information that a second victim had come forward to report similar sexualised messages from Trentham.

She also reported coming into contact with Trentham as part of a case he had previously investigated, with the messages sent in August 2020.

Our Professional Standards Department contacted the victim before gathering evidence which showed a series of sexualised images and messages sent by Trentham to the victim.

Trentham, who resigned from the force in December 2023, was subsequently charged with wilful misconduct / wilfully neglecting to perform his duty as a holder of a public office. He pleaded guilty to the offence at Sheffield Crown Court earlier today (20 August) where he was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.

Chief Constable Lauren Poultney said:

"Trentham's criminality goes completely against the standards I expect from officers here at South Yorkshire Police.

"He abused his position and displayed poor standards of professional behaviour that do not reflect our values of policing and public service.

"I want to thank the victim for cooperating with our investigation into Trentham's criminal behaviour, with her testimony resulting in him being given a further custodial sentence.

"We will not tolerate anyone within our force who behaves in such a corrupt way, and we do work proactively to look for any displays of behaviour that fall below our expected standards.

"We will continue to take appropriate action against those who fail to uphold the force's standards and culture, and I want to assure the public that any perpetrators of misconduct and criminality will be identified and dealt with robustly."
