It's being reported the North Stand at Sheffield Wednesday could be closed to fans for the start of next season for safety reasons.

It's as the city council is yet to issue the right certificates to guarantee its safe - the financially troubled club has previously pledged to carry out urgent work on the stand.

Councillor Joe Otten, Chair of the Environmental Services and Regulation Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said:

“The Safety Advisory Group, chaired by Sheffield City Council, met with Sheffield Wednesday Football Club where the North Stand was discussed and actions agreed to ensure spectator safety.

“As the certifying authority, we carry out our duties in working with organisations to make sure that they meet the requirements of the safety certificate that we issue to them. It’s vital for all of them to make sure that they provide a safe sports ground.

“The Safety Advisory Group will meet again on 18th July where Sheffield Wednesday Football Club are expected to provide a progress report.”
