Drivers in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire are being encouraged to 'plan' for any long- distance journeys over the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

Many families are preparing to travel out of the region for the next few days - with it being the final bank holiday of 2025.

Dave Wilson is the Operations Manager at National Highways - He has this message for anybody getting behind the wheel today:

"Within South Yorkshire - the usual routes will be busier than normal - so, the M1 around Meadowhall, as well as those heading further afield.

"We're expecting the M1 - particularly in South Yorkshire - to be quite busy - so, the advice remains the same; prepare for your journey and check your route before you set off.

"As usual with bank holidays - particularly the August Bank Holiday - the major roads and motorways tend to be busier than normal.

"People are trying to get their last break in before the schools go back.

"Leeds festival traffic as well will make a difference for those heading up to West Yorkshire.

"We're expecting the A1 & M1 to be busier than normal this weekend.

"The regular beauty spots will be popular as ever; so, anybody heading to Derbyshire and the Peak District - it's worth being prepared to be caught up in congestion.

"At least that way if you are - while it's not ideal - you will be prepared and able to cope with it.

"Top up your fuel oil and screen wash, plan your regular stops every two hours, check your tyre pressure, carry water in your car, and make sure your phone is charged.

"Those types of basic things can really help if you do get caught in an incident or unexpected congestion."
