Police given more time to question five people over newborn baby death in Sheffield
The investigation into the death is continuing
Police have been allowed to extend the time five people are in custody, as part of an investigation into the death of a newborn baby girl in Sheffield.
In the early hours of Sunday morning (30th August), officers received reports of a concern for the safety of a newborn baby in Wincobank, Sheffield.
A property on Holywell Heights was searched as part of enquiries, where the newborn baby was located.
Despite best efforts of emergency services, the baby girl was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
A total of seven people aged between 15 and 37 were arrested on suspicion of murder. Two people, aged 26 and 37, have since been bailed.
Yesterday (Monday 31st August) officers were granted a warrant for further detention for the five people who remain in custody as enquiries continue.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward, who is now leading the investigation and is the new senior investigating officer on this case, said:
"Our priority from the outset of this investigation has been to secure justice for the baby girl at the centre of this heartbreaking case and we are working round the clock to ensure this is achieved.
"This investigation is complex, with many different parts which are moving fast. As we work to establish answers, we please ask that you avoid speculating around the circumstances of this tragic incident."
Officers as well as specialist search officers, will continue to be around the Wincobank area conducting enquiries.
