Man jailed for nine years for death of police officer Ellie Smart

Dean Tolan, 35, has been sentenced to nine years behind bars for his involvement in the death of Ellie Smart, a communications officer with South Yorkshire Police.

Ellie Smart tragically lost her life in a collision that occurred on 25th January 2024. She was just 29 years old.

Ellie was respected and admired in her role with South Yorkshire Police, known for her professionalism, kindness, and dedication.

Her death has had a lasting impact on her colleagues.

Chief Constable Lauren Poultney paid tribute to her, saying:

“Ellie brought warmth, compassion and commitment to everything she did, and she was loved and respected by colleagues across the organisation. Her loss continues to be felt deeply, and we miss her every day. Our thoughts are with her family and those closest to her.”

Ellie's memory remains cherished within South Yorkshire Police, and she is forever part of their history.
