Doncaster man jailed for five years for 'horrific and sustained' knife attack in Thorne

The victim suffered serious injuries requiring extensive surgery

A man has been jailed for five years and four months after a brutal knife attack in Doncaster earlier this year.

The assault in Thorne on April 29 2025, leaving the victim with serious injuries, including slash wounds to his shoulder, arm, hand, stomach, and armpit which required surgery.

Harry Chappell, aged 40 and of no fixed address, was arrested shortly after the incident.

He was charged with Section 18 wounding with intent and possession of a knife in a public place - admitting to both offences at Sheffield Crown Court.

A sentencing on December 18 the judge handed him an extended term totalling five years and four months in jail, with an additional four years to be served on licence due to the violent nature of the attack.

Detective Constable Rachel Young, of South Yorkshire Police, said:

“This was a horrific and sustained attack that caused extremely serious injuries.

"It could have cost a man his life, and it was only thanks to the quick actions of people at the scene and responding officers that this was prevented and Chappell was brought to justice.

"Knife crime and violence of this kind has no place in South Yorkshire. I hope it sends a clear message to our communities of our commitment to keeping you safe and getting these dangerous individuals and their weapons off our streets.”
