Contracts signed for new 'Health on the High Street' hub in Doncaster
The former St Modwen building is set to become a 'Health on the High Street' facility run by the NHS.
A deal's been signed to open a brand new health centre in the centre of Doncaster.
The former St Modwen building is set to become a 'Health on the High Street' facility run by the NHS.
It'll allow people to be able to access medical appointments without the need for a trip to hospital, while the facility will also have a focus on helping young people with mental health issues.
The facility is a collaboration between the City of Doncaster Council and Rotherham, Doncaster and South Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH).
It's part of longer term plans to revamp the Waterdale area of the city.
Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said: “I am delighted that the contracts for the Health on the High Street initiative in Doncaster have now been finalised, and we can all now look forward to seeing NHS services delivered in our city centre."
"I want to thank our partners at RDaSH for committing to this project and providing a service that will be welcomed by many across the City of Doncaster, especially young people who will now have even greater support for their mental and emotional health.
“This project continues our plan to regenerate the Waterdale area of the city centre, which is in much need of redevelopment. It is time to change that.
"I am happy that the former St Modwen building will be the first to be brought back to life as part of proposals to regenerate the area and we will have further announcements in the coming weeks and months.”
Toby Lewis, Chief Executive of RDaSH, said: “The Council has ambitious regeneration plans for the city centre, and we are excited that health care is a key part of that transformation. We will work with other health bodies to make sure that the Waterdale development is ready in 2027 and improves access to care in the city.
“Neighbourhood health provision matters to reduce barriers to using services, and perhaps especially for young people we know that ease of access is critical, and the consequences of delay are significant.
"The Trust is excited to be expanding our services in Doncaster, building on having the shortest waiting times for mental healthcare in the NHS.”
