A man whose dog attacked a shopper while tied up outside of a Doncaster supermarket has been handed a suspended sentence and a fine.

The attack happened on January 2 on Springwell Lane, when the husky type named Tyson launched himself at a man exiting the shop - before biting his face.

The man was left with severe injuries.

The owner, Brian Smith of Galsworthy Close in Balby, then left the scene without talking to the victim.

He was later charged over the incident, receiving a three-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay ÂŁ800 in compensation.

However the judge stopped short of ordering Tyson be put down, instead ordering the dog be muzzled and on a lead at all times while in public.

The dog must also be neutered and cannot be walked by anyone under the age of 18.
