Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl linked with Rangers

It comes after Steven Gerrard ruled himself out

The new Rangers ownership enter the second week of their second managerial recruitment process under increasing pressure after Steven Gerrard ruled himself out of the running.

It was widely expected that the 45-year-old would be taking over from the sacked Russell Martin, who lost his job after securing just five wins in 17 matches in charge.

However, it emerged on Saturday night that the former Liverpool and England captain felt that the timing was not right for a second spell as Gers boss.

Danny Rohl is the new favourite after reportedly impressing senior figures at Rangers during initial talks last week.

The 36-year-old led Sheffield Wednesday to a 12th-placed finish in the Sky Bet Championship in his only full season as a manager before leaving the troubled Yorkshire club in July.

Previously an assistant manager at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and with the Germany national team, he had steered Wednesday out of relegation trouble the previous campaign.

However, if Gerrard was a figure that frustrated fans could rally behind, the appointment of Rohl would represent a gamble that could heap further scrutiny under the American consortium that took control at Ibrox shortly before Martin was appointed in June.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe promised fans a "rigorous, thoughtful recruitment process" which they were both "deeply involved" with and would give their "full attention" to.

The pair will be held accountable for this decision after fans turned against chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell as Martin's reign spiralled downwards.

Some of the other names who have been linked with the job have previous connections to Ibrox, including Shanghai Port boss Kevin Muscat and Hearts head coach Derek McInnes.

And former Rangers striker Billy Dodds believes popular opinion needs to be taken into account when a decision is made.

Dodds, who was part of Barry Ferguson's interim coaching team at Ibrox in the final three months of last season, believes the appointment of Rohl would not go down well with the support.

He told BBC Radio Scotland: "I just think when you go down that route again after what's happened at Rangers, going down that Championship route, I'm not saying he's not a good manager, I have heard that he is, but it's kind of rinse and repeat. And I don't think the Rangers fans want that.

"And I think it's huge that the hierarchy at Rangers take the fans into account this time.

"You could rattle out who is left, Derek McInnes and Kevin Muscat, and you could even throw in Barry Ferguson. I didn't want to mention Barry Ferguson because I thought people would be thinking I am punting him and I don't want to do that.

"But my main point is you have got to listen to the fans in this one. Don't select your manager through fans, but I think they have to take the fans' view into account."

Other names on bookmakers' lists include former Everton boss Sean Dyche, ex-Chelsea and West Ham boss Graham Potter and former Wolves manager Gary O'Neil.
