156 children injured by dogs across South Yorkshire in just six months
During last year’s summer holidays, 46 children under the age of 10 were injured by dogs.
156 children were injured by dogs in South Yorkshire in the first six months of this year, according to figures released by police.
It comes as the force launches calls for parents to be careful with mixing children and pets, as kids are more likely to be at home during the summer holidaus.
Last summer 46 children under 10 were bitten or otherwise injured by dogs.
South Yorkshire Police Inspector Dave Cook said: “People adore their dogs, and they become part of the family, but we can’t lose sight of the fact they are still animals with instinctive behaviours and no matter the breed, temperament or age, they can cause injury and fear.
“We are committed to educating owners and holding those who allow risk through their dog’s actions accountable, through prosecution and putting them before the courts.
“We will never know truly know how many incidents have been prevented because parents took the time to teach their children, or owners made small changes to their dog’s routine or put safety measures in place, but we’re thankful to all those who continue to work towards safer communities for all.
“So please, stop thinking ‘it won’t happen to me’ and talk to your child about respecting your own dog, and staying safe around other people’s dogs.
“If every owner steps up and makes small changes, we can make a difference.”
