New mural in Chesterfield celebrates local heritage and market life
Street artist Peachzz has unveiled artwork inspired by Chesterfield's history
A 'vibrant' new mural has been unveiled in Chesterfield town centre by renowned street artist Peachzz.
Painted on the side of the Pavements Shopping Centre, the artwork, titled ‘Local’, welcomes visitors to Chesterfield Market and shows aspects of the town’s heritage.
It includes a shire horse used for rubbish collection, a cattle brass referencing the historic cattle market, and a pomegranate from the borough crest. Hands included in the design symbolise trade.
Peachzz says that the mural was shaped by stories she discovered during her visits to Chesterfield.
“My concept was to have all these ideas and stories that I’ve heard shown through items that I’d bought from the market, so there’s loads of these little stories within it but overall, it aims to support all these small businesses and traders that make up this town,” Peachzz said.
“We’ve had no end of people coming and stopping us to say hello and telling us how much they like it."
Created using masonry paint with layers of spray paint for detail, Peachzz employed a “doodle grid” technique to accurately scale elements of the mural.
The project is part of Chesterfield Borough Council’s Animate Chesterfield programme, which aims to bring new artworks and activities to the town and Staveley as part of local regeneration projects.
Councillor Kate Sarvent said, “This is an exceptional piece of artwork which reflects our town’s history but also helps create a new vibrant welcome for visitors. I know it will be a source of inspiration for many of our residents, and they will enjoy seeing this sight for many years to come.”
Peachzz is a contemporary street artist from Sheffield who has painted artwork in the UK, Europe, the USA and South America.
