Barnsley has a European boxing champion for the first time!

Callum Simpson beat Ivan Zucco for the European super-middleweight title on Saturday night (7th June), after rising from the canvas twice!

He dropped the Italian three times in the 10th round at his hometown's Oakwell Stadium last night.

Zucco was previously undefeated, now holding a record of 21 wins and 1 loss.

He took up boxing in Bolton upon Dearne, Barnsley in 2004 at the age of 8, later moving to train at Barnsley Star Boxing Club under Trevor Schofield.

He had 53 amateur fights, winning 38 before turning professional in 2019.

His record now stands at 18 wins (13 by KO) and 0 losses.

It would have been an even sweeter victory for the South Yorkshire boxer, winning at Oakwell Stadium- home of his football team Barnsley FC.
