The family of a North Derbyshire teenager - who died nearly 12 years ago - tell us they've got a sense of 'relief at last'.

14-year-old Callum Hubbard - from Dronfield - passed away from meningitis in February of 2014.

However - an inquest into his death earlier this month found there were 'missed opportunities' around his treatment.

Callum Hubbard fainted in November of 2013 & was taken into Chesterfield Royal Hospital for treatment to an ear infection.

Medics there made a decision to withdraw anti-biotics after reviewing his condition further down the line - with jurors ruling that this 'probably contributed' to his death a few months later.

Callum's older brother - Danny - explains why these findings have been difficult for the family to accept:

"It's heart breaking. We've always said it would've been a lot easier if he'd died naturally and nobody was at fault.

"To learn that there were so many missed opportunities to prevent his death is just devastating.

"All we've wanted is these answers.

"We've known since Callum died that these were the correct answers.

"To get this in writing on his record of inquest is all we've been fighting for.

"I think the overwhelming sort of feeling is relief.

"It's coming up to 12 years since Callum died.

"That's too long for the right answers to come out around how Callum died.

"It's been a long and very difficult journey for us as his family.

In response, Mr Kevin Sargen - Medical Director at Chesterfield Royal Hospital - said:

"We would wish to express our condolences to Callum’s family – and we recognise that the time since Callum's death has been very difficult for them, including the last few days.

We respect HM Coroner’s findings and are grateful for his recognition for the improvements we have made since Callum’s death. We continue to apply the learnings across our Trust.”
