Raul Jimenez scores last-gasp winner as Wolves edge out Sheffield United
The veteran striker was on hand to turn home a miscued Tommy Doyle shot as Wolves climbed to seventh place in the table.
Second-half substitute Raul Jimenez scored a last-gasp winner to give Wolves a 1-0 Championship win at Sheffield United.
The veteran striker was on hand to turn home a miscued Tommy Doyle shot as Wolves climbed to seventh place in the table.
It was a deserved victory on the balance of play, with the visitors creating the majority of the chances throughout the 90 minutes and the home side failing to pose much of an attacking threat.
Wolves were the first to threaten when Adam Armstrong broke free on the left-hand side and pulled the ball back to Fer Lopez, whose shot was deflected wide.
A low cross from Rodrigo Gomes picked out Marshall Munetsi in a good central position, but he shot straight at Michael Cooper in the United goal.
With Wolves looking the more likely scorers in the first half, another opportunity went begging when Gomes was disappointed to drag his shot wide from inside the area.
The hosts created only one notable chance during the first 45 minutes, skipper Japhet Tanganga seeing his header comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Jose Sa after getting on the end of a free-kick from Sydie Peck.
In the early stages of the second half, Peck put a shot on target, but it was weak and straight at Sa.
Wolves had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down when Mateus Mane tried to lift the ball over Mark McGuinness inside the area and it struck the defender’s hand.
Mateus Bueno then shot wide of Cooper’s left-hand post.
Ghana international Jordan Ayew, making his debut for the home side after signing as a free agent during the week, made a good early impression after coming on as a substitute with some neat touches.
Soon after joining the action he sent over a ball from the right-hand side which flashed across the face of goal.
Jimenez, introduced off the bench in the 63rd minute in place of Gomes, put a couple of efforts wide, while fellow substitute Doyle saw his shot deflected off target before the Mexican striker provided the crucial intervention in the last minute of normal time.
Kieran Tripper found Doyle inside the area and his miscued shot fell to Jimenez, who applied the finish at the far post.
The goal came too late for United to muster any kind of response and in truth they could have few complaints about the scoreline, having survived a number of scares.
