Barnsley FC sign experienced Irish defender Eoghan O’Connell
He joins Reds until the end of the season
Barnsley FC has announced the signing of centre-back Eoghan O’Connell on a deal that runs until the end of the season.
The 30-year-old began his career at Celtic, where he earned the Academy Player of the Year award in 2015 and made his senior debut.
He further developed his skills during loan spells with Oldham Athletic, Cork City, and Walsall, before moving permanently to England with Bury, where he made 43 league appearances and scored two goals.
O’Connell has since played for various English clubs, including Rochdale, Charlton Athletic and Wrexham, where he made 91 appearances and scored twice during their climb through the divisions.
O’Connell has also represented the Republic of Ireland at U19 and U21 levels.
Barnsley Head Coach Conor Hourihane said: “We’re excited to welcome Eoghan to Oakwell. He brings real leadership, solidity, and football intelligence to our backline."
"His career speaks volumes—with nearly 300 league appearances and a promotion-winner, he’s exactly the kind of experienced defender we need.
"Eoghan fits our system and is a fantastic addition on and off the pitch.”
O’Connell will join up with the squad immediately and is eligible for upcoming fixtures, subject to EFL approval.
