A grieving South Yorkshire family tell us they're 'sceptical' about a fresh report into their son's death at Sheffield Children's Hospital.

5-year-old Ayaan Haroon died 3 years ago - after suffering from complications with an infection.

In March 2023 - Ayaan Haroon - who has a rare genetic condition called Hace 1 - was admitted to Sheffield Children's Hospital with breathing difficulties.

Tragically, he ended up passing away, but Ayaan's family feel with better medical care - he'd still be alive today.

However, a new, independent report into Ayaan's death has led to 22 recommendations being put forward to Sheffield Children's Hospital around the care they offer patients.

Haroon Rashid is Ayaan's dad - he doesn't want any other families to suffer like they have:

"We will make sure that Sheffield Children's Hospital are held to account, and each one of those recommendations is implemented.

"We will be going back to the Patient Safety Minister to ensure he oversees and makes sure Sheffield Children's Hospital implement every recommendation.

"These recommendations will be implemented as a lasting legacy for Ayaan and help to protect the lives of other children.

"We've been waiting for 3 years, and we still have hundreds of concerned which are unanswered.

"It has been profoundly traumatic for all our family because there is no closure for us as a family.

"It all feels too little, too late."

Dr Jeff Perring is the Executive Medical Director at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust:

“Sheffield Children’s is fully committed to learning from all complaint investigations into the care and experience of children, young people and their families.

“We recognise the profound impact that the loss of a child has on their family, friends and those who cared for them.

“We appreciate how difficult independent reports, such as this, are for the families affected.

"We understand the importance of working together to ensure that the lessons learned are implemented in our everyday care for children and young people.”
