£110,000 and gold seized in Sheffield gambling crackdown
Operation targets illegal gambling venues linked to organised crime
A coordinated operation in South Yorkshire has led to the seizure of cash, gold, and illegal betting terminals as part of a crackdown on illegal gambling.
In Sheffield and Doncaster, officers discovered sixteen illegal betting terminals, cash thought to exceed £110,000, and large amounts of gold during raids on venues suspected of involvement in unlawful gambling and money laundering.
The raid, occurring on the evenings of 4th August and 5th August, was part of the ongoing Operation Duxford and Operation Snaresbrook, supported by the Gambling Commission and various local enforcement agencies.
Three individuals were arrested for immigration offences, possession of a weapon, and gambling-related offences.
Inspector Amy Mellor from Sheffield emphasised the significance of joint efforts in tackling illegal gambling, which often funds organised crime, and pledged continued investigations to address such community concerns.
Sue Young from the Gambling Commission highlighted the impact of unlicensed operators, stressing the determination to shut down illegal operations and hold perpetrators accountable.
The Yorkshire & Humber Regional and Organised Crime Unit's Detective Superintendent Al Burns spoke of improved capabilities in responding swiftly to intelligence and combating organised crime through collaborative efforts.
Sheffield City Council Director Richard Eyre reiterated the commitment to reclaiming the high street, underscoring efforts to support legal businesses and community safety.
The operation also led to the recovery of stolen motorbikes, counterfeit tobacco, and a cannabis setup at various locations.
