Arrest made after murder investigation in Barnsley
Detectives act swiftly following discovery of body
A man has been arrested following a murder investigation into the death of a 62-year-old man from Sheffield, whose body was found in Barnsley.
The investigation commenced on Friday, 14th August, after officers received reports of the missing man at 5:45pm.
Later that day, police attended a property on George Street in Worsborough Bridge, Barnsley, where the body of the man was discovered at 10:16pm.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his family is being supported by Family Liaison Officers, requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Detectives in the Major Crime Unit launched a murder investigation, resulting in the arrest of a 60-year-old man on suspicion of murder.
He remains in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Aneela Khalil-Khan, overseeing the investigation, stated, "Our officers have moved fast and have made an arrest. They are now working hard to determine the circumstances around this tragic incident."
Three scenes have been established: two on George Street and one on the TransPennine trail near George Street as part of the inquiries.
Police are inviting anyone with information to call 101 or report online, quoting incident number 1238 of 14th August 2026.
As per protocol, a self-referral has been made to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the man's prior report as missing.
