Man banned from keeping animals after cruelty case in Rotherham
Jake Riley sentenced for causing suffering to dogs and a snake
A Nottinghamshire man has been banned from owning animals for seven years after being sentenced for causing unnecessary suffering to six dogs and a snake in Rotherham.
Jake Riley, 35, of Church Close in Radcliffe-On-Trent, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on December 15 after pleading guilty to seven offences linked to animal cruelty.
Earlier this year, officers searched a property in Rotherham, where Riley was housing the animals in 'appalling' conditions.
Two dogs were found confined in dirty crates without access to water, while all six had injuries and medical issues resulting from neglect.
A vets assessment highlighted the severe lack of care provided to the dogs. One of the animals was in such poor health that it had to be euthanised immediately after being seized.
Two others were later put to sleep following their deteriorating conditions, but the remaining three dogs have since undergone rehabilitation and now live with new owners.
Inside the property, officers also discovered the carcass of a Royal Python snake in a glass case with a heat lamp that lacked a bulb. A veterinary report confirmed the snake had starved to death.
Riley was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, fined £754, and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work within 12 months.
