Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed a 100 metre cordon which was put in place last night in Worle has now been lifted.

As part of an ongoing investigation into fraud offences, officers arrested a man, aged 70, on suspicion of fraud by false representation in Becket Road, in Worle near Weston-super-Mare.

During searches of the property, some suspicious substances and items were located.

As a precautionary safety measure, they said the 100m cordon was been put in place and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit was deployed to the scene.

A number of properties within the cordon were evacuated.

In a statement at 6:45am, officers said: "The cordon in Becket Road, and the surrounding area, has now been lifted and residents are free to return home at their convenience.

"From all of us at Avon and Somerset Police, we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the displaced residents, their friends and family for their patience and understanding.

"We would also like to recognise some businesses who offered support and food to those who had been impacted by the cordon.

"We will endeavour to provide a fuller update today."
