A Peterborough councillor has issued a warning after youths reportedly lit fires at a local skate park.

Paston and Walton ward councillors Alex Rafiq and Ivelina Banyalieva were made aware by residents of fires being lit at Paston skate park over the weekend.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Cllr Rafiq claimed that the perpetrators were a group of children aged between 12 and 16.

“They don’t realise the risks,” he said.

“If that spread massively and someone died, or someone’s house was burnt down then they would be in serious trouble.

“Luckily in Paston we have a lot of Ring doorbell footage and the CCTV operational again at the Chadburn Centre, so I’ve contacted the police with all the information and where these kids are hanging about.”

Cllr Rafiq said the incidents, one of which took place on Sunday, September 6, were “extremely disappointing” and that parents should speak to their children if they had any indication they were involved.

“Damage to our parks and open spaces makes it extremely difficult for myself and Cllr Banyalieva to obtain funding for improvements for our community so we must work together to stomp this out,” he added.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “The local neighbourhood team are working with partners and schools around education about the dangers of fires.

“Anyone who sees anything suspicious is urged to contact police and officers will respond accordingly.”
