New specialist unit for SEND pupils to open at Wittering Primary School
Refurbishment authorised to support children with SEMH needs
Plans have been approved to create a new specialist unit for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at Wittering Primary School.
Cabinet members have authorised the refurbishment of an underutilised space at the school to accommodate a dedicated SEND Specialist Unit for up to 40 children aged 4 to 11 with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
The unit is scheduled to open in September 2027 and aims to provide a nurturing and inspiring environment where each child can flourish.
This initiative is part of the council’s commitment to delivering quality education within the local community for all children, regardless of their individual needs.
The development aligns with government’s White Paper Reforms, reinforcing the expectation that children with SEND should attend local schools where their needs are met by trained staff.
Council officers are collaborating with school staff and the Soke Education Trust, which runs Wittering Primary School, to design and implement the unit.
To ensure high standards of provision, there will be enhanced training, supervision, and ongoing support for staff, equipping them to deliver aspirational outcomes for children with SEND.
Collaboration with local special schools will enhance the expertise of the team, ensuring continuity of care and teaching excellence.
Councillor Katy Cole, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the positive impact for pupils and staff at Wittering Primary School.
"I am delighted that this new unit will be created and confident it will have a positive effect for pupils and staff at Wittering Primary School," Councillor Cole said.
"By investing in inclusive provision, we are ensuring that children and families can remain rooted in their communities while benefiting from specialist support."
Cathy Carlisle, CEO of Soke Education Trust, shared her excitement for the specialized teaching and resources the unit will offer.
"We are excited to provide specialised teaching and resources that will be carefully targeted to children with SEND," Carlisle said, emphasizing the importance of ensuring success and belonging for all children attending the new unit.
