Drivers in Cambridgeshire are being reminded to check and prepare their vehicles for winter conditions as part of a campaign to improve road safety.

With darker nights and colder weather settling in, Cambridgeshire Constabulary has launched its winter checks initiative to minimise collisions and breakdowns caused by poorly maintained vehicles.

To coincide with National Road Safety Week, which took place from 17th to 23rd November, the Casualty Reduction team, led by PC Adrian Boddington, spoke to over 300 people at pop-up stalls across Huntingdon, Hampton, Ely, Bar Hill, and Peterborough.

Motorists were encouraged to carry out simple vehicle checks before setting off and were reminded of the importance of regular maintenance. The team also engaged with over 500 children, sharing advice on road safety topics such as drink driving, speeding, e-scooters, and cycle security.

PC Boddington explained the importance of being prepared, saying: “Winter driving brings extra challenges, from icy roads to reduced visibility, and a well-maintained vehicle can make all the difference.

“Simple checks on tyre tread, windscreen wash, dashboard warnings and working lights can prevent breakdowns and even save lives. We’re asking drivers to take a few minutes before every journey to make sure their vehicle is safe and ready for the conditions.”

Motorists are being urged to think FLOWER before they begin their journeys:

Fuel – Do you have enough to reach your destination?

Lights – Ensure headlights, brake lights and indicators are all working.

Oil – Check levels when the engine is cold; they should be between the two markings on the dipstick.

Water – Top up lubricants, coolants, and washer fluid.

Electrics – Check battery health, especially in colder weather.

Rubber – Inspect tyres for pressure, tread depth, uneven wear, and sidewall damage, and ensure wiper blades are in good condition.

Drivers are encouraged to take these practical steps to help keep themselves and others safe during winter road conditions.
