Two 17-year-olds have been sentenced to prison for stabbing another teenager in an underpass in Peterborough city centre.

The boys, hailing from Huntingdon and Peterborough, were involved in an attack on their victim, who was also 17, using a knife and a machete in the Cowgate underpass on 8th January.

Their violent actions resulted in significant facial injuries for the victim, including a wound to the chin.

Thankfully, the victim managed to escape and seek medical attention.

Despite fleeing the scene, the perpetrators, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were swiftly identified and arrested.

Investigations later revealed that the attacker from Peterborough had an altercation with the victim in the city centre three days prior to the attack.

Additionally, CCTV footage showed the assailants meeting and shaking hands shortly before the attack occurred.

Both teenagers confessed to charges of wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article in public.

At Cambridge Crown Court on 22nd May, the teenager from Peterborough was sentenced to 40 months in jail, having also pleaded guilty to affray and an additional count of possession of a bladed article related to the earlier incident.

The teenager from Huntingdon received a 35-month jail term.

Detective Constable Andrew Holland commented, "It was sheer luck that this incident didn’t result in a fatality. The two boys swung their weapons towards the victim’s head and throat, with a matter of inches being the difference between a nasty facial injury and hitting a vital artery."

He expressed satisfaction that the attackers were quickly apprehended and jailed.

"Both locally and nationally, we have seen the tragic consequences of knife crime, and tackling it is a priority," Holland added.
