Stamford has crowned Michelle Liebst as its new Poet Laureate, marking the beginning of a year dedicated to enriching the town's spoken word scene.

Chosen from a record 17 competitors, Liebst, a historian residing in Stamford, impressed both judges and audience with her performance in the Arts Centre Ballroom.

Expressing her surprise upon receiving the accolade, she stated, “I am very shocked. It was fun to compete, and I am looking forward to the year ahead.”

Her goal is to integrate poetry into Stamford's daily life, reflecting the town's unique character.

Sixteen-year-old Poppy Watling, attending Stamford Welland Academy, was named the Stamford Youth Laureate.

She intends to showcase poetry's presence beyond books, capturing the voices of young people across South Kesteven.

The judging panel included Stamford Mayor Cllr Amanda Wheeler, Deputy Mayor Cllr Jane Kingman, previous laureate Ross Ayres, and SKDC Arts Programme Officer Karen Burrows.

Promoting Local Talent

Karen Burrows acknowledged the enthusiasm for poetry shown during the event, citing the district’s support for local poets as part of South Kesteven District Council's mission.

Cllr Paul Stokes, SKDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, praised the growth of interest in poetry, which led to a shortlist for the first time in years, reflecting the thriving literary scene.

Michelle Liebst's term, upcoming commissions, and collaboration with the Arts Centre staff promise a year filled with poetic milestones.
