Rutland Urged to Get Ready for Summer Risks
Online Sessions Offer Guidance on Heatwaves, Floods and More
People and businesses in Rutland are being encouraged to get ready for the range of risks summer can bring, with free online sessions now on offer.
The Risk Ready Communities programme is running in June and July, aiming to help everyone stay safe from dangers like heatwaves, wildfires and storms.
Alice Moorcroft-Hughes from the Leicestershire and Rutland Resilience Forum explained:
“Wildfires are an increasing risk and other summer hazards can include possible power outages, summer storms, and flooding."
"And then the flip side of that can sometimes be droughts, where we see hose pipe bans if hot weather really kind of impacts people's ability to stay cool."
"It can also be very dangerous. Obviously wildfires can cause environmental damage as well as impacts to residential areas. And then summer flooding can often take people by surprise.”
She says these issues can affect anyone in Rutland, but businesses in particular can face extra problems:
“These summer hazards can impact absolutely everybody, but from a business's perspective, they really start to see challenges coming in with transport disruption, supply chain disruption."
"That will of course also impact workforce, creating airflow within living and working spaces, opening windows at cooler parts of the day. All lots of different things you can do.”
The programme aims to help people understand the risks and get practical tips to look after themselves and their community through the summer.
