A Belarusian national is due to appear at the Old Bailey over an alleged arson plot after being arrested on suspicion of an offence under the National Security Act.

Artsem Sadardzinau, 30, from Rutland in the East Midlands, has been charged with conspiracy with others to commit arson to damage a vehicle by fire between August 31 and February 15.

On February 15, officers from Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London arrested the defendant at an address in Rutland with the support of colleagues in the East Midlands special operations unit.

Police said he was initially arrested on suspicion of an offence under section 12 of the National Security Act 2023.

After being taken to a London police station, he was further detained under the Act and charged on February 20.

A spokesman for CTP London told the Press Association that while the investigation remains ongoing, officers do not believe there to be any wider threat to the public in relation to the matter.

Sadardzinau is due to appear at the Old Bailey before Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb on Friday.
