Cambridgeshire Police Chief launches review into events leading up to train attack
Cambridgeshire Police Chief Constable Simon Megicks has announced an internal review into the events leading up to the mass stabbing on a train travelling through the county on Saturday.
The investigation follows the force’s decision to voluntarily refer itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). However, the IOPC determined the referral did not meet the criteria for further action.
Chief Constable Megicks confirmed his commitment to additional scrutiny, stating on Tuesday: "Yesterday I commissioned an internal review of the events which occurred prior to the tragic events of Saturday evening.
"Today I have received a formal request from police and crime commissioner Darryl Preston for this review. I welcome this additional scrutiny and will provide a report to him in due course."
The attack occurred on board a London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service, leaving multiple people injured, including staff member Samir Zitouni, a 48-year-old customer experience host. Mr. Zitouni remains in hospital after being seriously injured while protecting passengers during the incident.
Further tributes have been paid to Mr. Zitouni for his bravery during the attack, with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander praising his actions:
"Sam went to work on Saturday morning to do his job. He left a hero. His remarkable quick thinking and selfless action saved lives and he has demonstrated bravery beyond measure."
David Horne, LNER managing director, added: "In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him. His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him, and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening."
The review led by Cambridgeshire Police aims to provide clarity on the events preceding the train attack, ensuring accountability and learning opportunities for preventing similar incidents in the future.
