Plans to boost Peterborough’s economy are getting a push from Mayor Paul Bristow
A major growth plan has been launched aiming to make the city the fastest growing economy outside London
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s mayor, Paul Bristow, has taken an ambitious plan to Westminster.
He's asking the Government to invest in the region and help triple the size of the local economy.
This is the most ambitious plan for local growth anywhere in the country
The Local Growth Plan aims to make people “healthier, wealthier and happier” by focusing on the area’s strengths and closing key infrastructure gaps.
The plan, shaped by councils, businesses, educators and charities, targets six key sectors including life sciences, advanced manufacturing and digital technologies.
It also sets out four new “Opportunity Zones” in Cambridge, Peterborough, North Hunts and the Fens, designed to attract investment, create jobs and boost skills.
We want a future that works for everyone
Mayor Paul Bristow said:
“This is the most ambitious plan for local growth anywhere in the country."
“Growth is good for our communities. It funds the transport we need to get around, unlocks the well-planned homes we need to live in, brings well-paid jobs in strong industries and increases the skills support that helps local people get them."
“We’ve built this plan with partners from every part of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough because we want a future that works for everyone."
“Our message to Government is simple: we’re ready to deliver – but we need Ministers to match our ambition. It’s time to back Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and invest in key projects like Ely Junction, dualled A-roads, better trains and greater energy and water capacity. That’s how we will deliver and make Cambridgeshire and Peterborough healthier, wealthier and happier.”
He says the plan could add fifty-five billion pounds in economic growth by 2050.
Local and national leaders say the blueprint will help create new opportunities for people and businesses—if Ministers match the region’s ambition.
