Fire crews responding to a house fire in Peterborough encountered delays due to parked vehicles obstructing nearby roads, impeding their access to the scene.

On Monday evening, at approximately 8.10pm, units from Dogsthorpe and Stanground fire stations were alerted to a blaze on Victoria Street in Fletton, but faced complications on route.

Station Commander Gareth Boyd highlighted the urgency of maintaining clear access for emergency vehicles, expressing concerns over parking obstacles on narrow streets.

“We appreciate parking your car near your home can be a challenge, however we really need residents to think about where they leave their cars and make sure there is enough space for our fire engines to pass through in an emergency,” Boyd said.

Despite the impediments, fire crews managed to extinguish the kitchen fire promptly upon arrival, preventing further spread within the property.

Boyd continued to stress the frequency of such delays, urging residents to evaluate their parking practices, particularly overnight.

"In this instance, we were still able to get to the property quickly to prevent the fire from spreading," Boyd said. "The next time we might not be as fortunate and the delay could be devastating."

The public is encouraged to be mindful of how their parking choices may impact emergency responders, and to ask themselves crucial questions regarding accessibility and access:

  • Could a fire engine or ambulance get through?
  • Are you blocking the turning space?
  • Would emergency crews lose vital time getting to someone in need?
