A Peterborough couple has been heavily fined after CCTV footage captured them fly-tipping household waste at various locations in the city.

Marian and Mirela Vasile, residents of Gladstone Street, were seen dumping several bags of household waste on Russell Street in November 2024.

In separate incidents the same week, Marian Vasile also dumped additional items on Russell Street and a sofa on Springfield Road.

These actions, documented by CCTV, led to their prosecution by the council’s Safer Communities team.

Recently, at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court, both pleaded guilty to the offences.

Marian Vasile was ordered to pay a total of £1,692, consisting of a £923 fine, £400 in costs, and a £369 victim surcharge.

Mirela Vasile was fined £960, including a £400 fine, £400 in costs, and a £160 victim surcharge.

Despite their early guilty pleas, magistrates emphasised the gravity of their conduct.

Councillor Chris Wiggin, Cabinet Member for Environment, underscored the seriousness of fly-tipping and hoped these fines would deter future illegal waste dumping.

Residents are reminded to legally dispose of waste by utilising services such as the Household Recycling Centre in Fengate, licensed waste companies, or the bulky waste collection service.

To prevent fly-tipping, residents should employ registered waste carriers. Improper disposal can lead to fines or prosecution.

Witnesses of fly-tipping are urged to call the police on 999 to report it as a crime in progress and notify the local waste authority.
