Peterborough Council approves £2 million for pothole prevention
It's part of a £7.6 million investment in the city’s highways network
Peterborough City Council has approved nearly £2 million for pothole prevention as part of a £7.6 million investment in the city’s highways network.
The funding, agreed at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday 15 April, is part of the council’s 2025/26 Transport Capital Programme. The works will be delivered by the council’s highways partner, Milestone Infrastructure Limited.
The £7.6 million package is funded by two Department for Transport grants and will be split across five key areas:
£1.9 million for pothole prevention
£2.5 million for general highways improvements
£1.2 million for integrated transport upgrades
£1.2 million for bridge works
£800,000 for street lighting improvements
Councillors raised concerns about the quality and cost of repairs. Deputy Leader Cllr Mohammed Jamil questioned the standard of materials used, while officers assured the council is working closely with Milestone to use modern technologies that deliver long-lasting results.
Adrian Chapman, the council’s executive director for place and economy, said: “We’re in a stronger position than many councils. We’re constantly trialling new methods to improve the quality of repairs.”
Cabinet member for transport, Cllr Angus Ellis, also highlighted Milestone’s strong track record, noting the company is shortlisted for a national award.
The investment will help upgrade roads, footpaths, lighting, bridges, cycleways and bus stops across Peterborough.
