Peterborough City Centre Set for Major Makeover

Government Funding to Bring More Greenery, New Toilets and Market Stalls

Published 7th Jul 2026

Peterborough city centre is set to be transformed after winning one and a half million pounds from the Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund.

The money will be spent on a raft of improvements designed to make the area more attractive and enjoyable for everyone.

Over the next few weeks, residents and visitors will start to see new hanging baskets, more greenery and planters appearing around Cathedral Square and St John’s Square.

There are also plans for new, accessible toilets, better seating, and playful structures that children can climb and sit on, making the space more family-friendly.

Moveable, uniform market stalls are also on the way, aimed at boosting specialist and artisan markets and giving traders more flexibility.

The changes are expected to encourage more people to spend time in the city centre, help attract new shops and businesses, and create a greener, more welcoming atmosphere.

The plans have been shaped with the help of local businesses and community groups, as part of wider efforts to revitalise Peterborough’s heart for the future.
