A man who punched his partner in the jaw while she slept at their home in Peterborough has has been jailed for one-and-a-half years.

Alvis Sturmanis, 44, tried to wake the victim to ask her a question while she was sleeping in December last year. Unhappy with her response because she was still half asleep, he punched her in the jaw.

As she got up and tried to get away, he grabbed her by the shoulder to prevent her leaving the room.

Sturmanis was arrested and released on bail with strict conditions not to contact the victim or either of their two children.

However, he returned to the home he shared with his partner and children and shouted at his son, telling him he would regret calling the police on him. He also attempted to hang himself in front of his children.

Sturmanis admitted assault ABH, assault by beating and intimidating a witness.

He also pleaded guilty to the criminal damage of the home he shared with the victim earlier in the year. She had gone on holiday, but Sturmanis threatened to call the airport to prevent her from going away, and when she returned, he had wreaked a trail of destruction in the house.

Sturmanis, of Alexandra Road, Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, was sentenced to one year and six months in prison at Peterborough Crown Court on Friday 1 May. He was also handed a seven-year restraining order.

Detective Constable Lydia Halliday, who investigated, said: “Sturmanis’ sustained threatening, abusive, and violent behaviour was absolutely appalling and I would like to commend the victim for the courage she has shown throughout. The level of manipulation he showed towards the victim and their children was also shocking.

“Domestic abuse can take many forms and often escalates quickly. If you or someone you know is experiencing violence or controlling behaviour, please know that support is available and we will always take reports seriously.”
