New Oakham youth space opens after young people help shape plans
Young people can meet friends, try activities and spend time with trusted adults at the new space behind the Best Start Family Hub
A new youth space is opening in Oakham after young people in Rutland said they wanted somewhere safe, relaxed and welcoming to spend time with friends.
The space is based behind the Best Start Family Hub, next to Oakham Library, and has been developed by Living Well Rutland following feedback from young people.
Its launch began this week with doors open between four and half past five each afternoon until Friday.
Activities include an opening party, Lego Masters, a games night for Year Seven pupils, a mocktail bar and Friday Vibes.
Young people will be able to use facilities including pool, air hockey, table tennis, an interactive screen, a boxing machine and a sensory bubble wall. There are also quieter areas for people to relax and socialise.
The space will not have a permanent name straight away, with young people set to have the final say on what it should be called. They will also be asked to help decide which activities, groups and opportunities are offered after the launch week.
Rutland County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children and Families, Councillor Tim Smith, says the new space has been shaped by the people it is for:
“It’s a space for them. And also it was not a space that we designed. They told us the things they wanted within the space and the things they wanted to do within the space.
“In particular, they wanted a safe space, a welcoming space where they could meet with their friends and also to have a trusted adult.
“I think there’s certainly enough interest from the young people that’d like to come along. And with the sessions that they’ve planned, we hope they see value in it and keep coming.
“I just realised how important it is to listen to young people and what they want, and it makes much better working with them than imposing what we think they want.”
Young people can attend one session, go along throughout the week or simply call in to see the space. They do not need to know anyone else there or take part in every activity.
