A man who attacked a 14-year-old girl and threatened her with a machete on a Peterborough street has been sentenced to six months in prison.

The incident happened in High Street, Fletton, at about 8.30pm on 11 May last year, when the girl was removing a sign she considered inappropriate from a fence.

John Forrester, 61, became angry, punched the girl in the face, and put his hands around her throat, making it hard for her to breathe. He then went back inside his home but came out shortly afterwards carrying a machete.

Police were called and arrested Forrester. On Monday (21 July) at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to assault by beating and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Police Constable Reegan Alcock said: “Forrester’s reaction was completely disproportionate. This was a scary experience for the victim, and I’m pleased he was apprehended before the situation escalated further.”
