New Era for Posh: Luke Williams Leads First Game After Darren Ferguson’s Departure
Peterborough United face Cardiff in the FA Cup as new boss Luke Williams looks to steady the team sitting bottom of League One
Peterborough United play their first game without club legend Darren Ferguson today.
The Posh go against Cardiff in an FA Cup match headed by new manager Luke Williams.
The Posh currently sit at the bottom of the League One table.
Williams told us what he’s looking for from his players as he takes charge for the first time:
“It’s a challenge, but I’ve been in this situation a couple of times and so try to use that experience to see if I can muddle through."
"Certainly not ideal, of course, but then these things happen in football."
"I need to try and find the winning formation, winning combination of players."
"Hopefully I have enough experience and enough help with the staff and enough commitment from the players that we can do that.”
Reflecting on following in Ferguson’s footsteps, Williams added:
“It’s going to be really tough because you can’t replace somebody like that."
"You can never be better. Only try to do my own thing and try to earn the respect of the fans myself, but certainly somebody that I regard as a legend and somebody that I’ve admired and looked up to."
"There’s a lot of pressure. It’s quite overwhelming, but of course, the more times you experience something, the easier it can be."
"So hopefully that can help me to focus on the job and not be distracted by the pressures around it.”
He said the first priority will be to build understanding and belief within the squad:
“We’re in a stage where we’ll be trying to get to know each other, so the first thing to see is real commitment from the players."
"And then if I can see the unique quality that each player has, if they can show that, then it helps me to build the trust with a player."
"But I think the expectations for me that again, that the players show a desire, show that there’s still a fight, show that they’ve got the belief in themself in each other.”
As the new era begins, all eyes will be on how Williams’ Posh perform against Cardiff this afternoon.
Kick-off is at 3pm at the Weston Homes Stadium.
