Lincolnshire drivers urged to take extra care as freezing temperatures loom

Drivers urged to slow down and think twice before travelling

With temperatures expected to fall to minus four on Saturday night and remain low for several days, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue says winter driving risks are increasing -particularly on rural roads.

The service has already seen a rise in call-outs over recent weeks.

Many of Lincolnshire’s roads are unlit, narrow and bordered by ditches, making them hazardous even in normal conditions. Ice can significantly increase the danger.

John Hardy, a road safety advocate with the service, is urging drivers to slow down and think carefully before setting off.

“Do you really need to make that journey, or can you go out at a quieter time?” he said. “Give yourself plenty of time and plan your route.”

John also stressed the importance of vehicle checks in cold weather.

“Make sure your car is fully defrosted before you go out,” he said. “Check your tyres, your washer fluid, and clear any snow from the bonnet and roof.”

Drivers are also advised to check tyre tread and pressure.

Fire crews in Lincolnshire are trained to provide first aid at road traffic collisions and attend incidents across the county - but the message is that many winter crashes are preventable.

Motorists are being reminded to drive to the conditions, be patient, and give themselves extra time, as cold weather continues into next week.
