A prolific burglar who brought along his dog on a month-long crime spree in Peterborough has been jailed for over five years.
James Evans, 42, admitted to over a dozen offences, including one burglary where he brought his dog and abandoned him as he ran from police.
Huntingdon Crown Court heard how in the early hours of 22 February, Evans broke into a house in Whittlesey with his dog, took the keys to a Seat Leon and drove off.
Officers spotted him in the car around 45 minutes later.
After a short pursuit, he abandoned the car and his pet, and ran away.
The dog was taken to a kennels until a family member could collect them.
Investigations showed that Evans had burgled another two homes in the area, abandoning yet another car he stole after taking items from inside it.
Whilst on the run, he burgled properties in Peterborough, Boston and Crowland.
Evans ended up leaving a black glove at one of the properties, which linked him to the burglaries.
He was arrested in Eye on 25 March after stealing a handbag containing £220.
Evans, of no known address, admitted nine counts of burglary, three counts of theft and one of attempted burglary. He denied a second count of attempted burglary, and this was ordered to remain on file.
He's now been jailed for five years and eight months.
