Police say they're very concerned about an increase in the amount of drugs coming into Rutland.

It's part of county lines operations where young people are manipulated into transporting illegal substances.

Officers say early intervention is key to prevent youngsters from getting involved.

We've been speaking to Liam Palmer, neighbourhood Sergeant for Rutland about the issue.

We do a lot of cross border work with our intelligence officers

"The difficulty you're always going to face with cross border is trying to link in with the areas that are affected."

"We do a lot of cross border work with our intelligence officers and ultimately we need to make sure that both sides of the cross border work are working together and making sure we're developing the right operational tactics to get them stopped and dealt with."

"The message I'd pass out to - especially family members - is that if they notice they're receiving gifts or coming back with expensive items that there's not justifiable reasons for them having - report those concerns into us."

He spoke about the work police do in schools

We don't want to see their involvement spiral into something that's unmanageable

"They work fantastically in schools we have in Rutland to ensure those identified children get the support they need and feel safe enough to open up about their involvement."

"That kind of working partnership is really strong and is helping us support those individuals but also prevent them becoming part of an investigation or criminalising them at a young age."

"The difficulty with county lines is once that somebody is involved in that process should they fall foul of the police - obviously they're becoming criminalised."

"We want to make sure they're not getting involved with organised crime groups because we don't want to see their involvement spiral into something that's unmanageable."
