A man from Holbeach is urging more young people to join the stem cell register after receiving a life-saving transplant six months ago.

Dan Chapman, who was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia, faced months of uncertainty as he waited for a suitable donor—knowing that without one, his chances of survival were slim.

Now recovering and looking ahead to running his first marathon, he is speaking out to encourage others to sign up and potentially save lives.

Health charity Anthony Nolan reports that while people under 30 provide the majority of stem cell donations, they make up only 40 percent of those on the register.

The organisation says increasing the number of young donors is critical, as younger stem cells often lead to better transplant outcomes.

Dan knows first-hand how vital that donor pool is:

“The fact that I'm still here is I think a massive testament to anyone who will join the stem cell register, but also just that human determination,” he said. “And it's so simple. It's literally a swab around the mouth to join the register.”

“You could be called up. And if you are, it's a simple procedure in which to extract the stem cells, you're not any worse off, you're not ill,” he explained.

For Dan, the impact of one anonymous donor has been life-changing.

“That little bag of cells that came into that room six months ago has literally meant the difference between me dying at the age of 31 and me at the age of 32, getting ready to run my first marathon.”

At the height of his illness, the future was far from certain.

“I didn't know at one point, and the doctors didn't know at one point if I would even be here because that's how serious it was,” he said. “And unfortunately, that is what the reality is of those people waiting for a stem cell transplant—waiting for a suitable donor.”

Dan now hopes his story will inspire more young people to take a simple step that could one day save a life—just as someone did for him.
