A man has been jailed for murdering his mother at their home in Peterborough.

Gregory Coulson stabbed 67-year-old Carmen Coulson to death in their Lingwood Park home in Longthorpe.

The 31 year-old has been handed a life sentence, with a minimum term before application for parole 24 years 248 days

Coulson called police at 2.44am on Sunday 9th February last year, although it is believed the attack happened the night before.

Officers arrived to find Mrs Coulson dead in the property, with a post-mortem revealing multiple wounds, including a fatal stab to the heart.

During the trial at Huntingdon Law Courts, Coulson's defence suggested that intruders were responsible for the murder. However, the jury unanimously dismissed this claim and confirmed Coulson's guilt.

Detective Inspector Mark Dollard commented on the attack, noting evidence of Coulson's heavy cocaine and alcohol usage in the months leading up to the murder.

He emphasized the tragedy of Carmen's death for her family and extended his thoughts to them, acknowledging their dignity throughout the trial.

Statements during Coulson's arrest revealed him questioning officers about the sentencing duration for murder.

In police interviews, Coulson admitted responsibility for his mother's murder, explaining he was listening to music, painting, and drinking vodka that night.

He described feelings of distress and dissatisfaction, stating, “If I'm honest this is totally out of my character, I've not been happy for a while."

Coulson confessed to taking a steak knife from the kitchen and stabbing his mother around 10pm, subsequently going to bed and later contacting police.
