Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Rupert Matthews has secured £195,000 to enhance support services for victims affected by the Government’s early release scheme for prisoners.

The funding from the Ministry of Justice will bolster the Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland PCC's Victim First services, providing specialist assistance and emotional support to victims experiencing increased anxiety due to early release arrangements.

Starting 1st October 2026, sentencing rules will lead to some prisoners being released earlier than planned to alleviate prison overcrowding, although serious offenders will remain exempt from the changes.

Locally, the funding will inaugurate an online awareness campaign, employ a specialist worker for victim support, and distribute security packs to those assessed as needing extra precautions.

Rupert Matthews welcomed the funding, emphasising victims' needs within the criminal justice system and pledging collaboration with partners to best utilise the funds for community impact.
