A drink driver who brandished an air rifle and led police on a high-speed chase near a Peterborough primary school has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.

James Lonergan, 59, was reported to be causing a disturbance in Copeland, Bretton, around 3pm on 22nd October.

Armed officers responded to reports of Lonergan firing and waving the weapon in the air.

Lonergan attempted to flee by ramming a police vehicle and driving off in a Land Rover, exceeding speed limits during the ensuing pursuit.

The chase concluded near Nova Primary Academy, Middleton, Bretton, coinciding with children leaving school.

Following his arrest, Lonergan failed a breathalyser test, showing a reading over double the legal limit.

He admitted charges including possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, possession of a knife in a public place, dangerous driving and drink driving.

On Tuesday, 23rd June, at Cambridge Crown Court, Lonergan was sentenced to four years and four months behind bars.

DC Rebecca Corder said: “Lonergan’s behaviour was disgraceful. To brandish a firearm in the street and then lead officers on a pursuit near a school – all while over the limit - is reckless beyond belief.

“I’m pleased he was apprehended before anyone was hurt and has now been jailed.”
