Dangerous driver in Peterborough pursued by police crashes and tries to flee
Cian McCluskey sentenced for erratic driving and evading arrest
A dangerous driver in Peterborough led police on a high-speed chase, eventually crashing into a parked car before attempting to escape on foot with only one shoe.
On 24th April, Cian McCluskey, 31, was speeding in a Ford Transit truck in Bretton Gate when he attracted the attention of patrolling officers.
The officers turned their vehicle to pursue McCluskey, signalling him to stop.
However, McCluskey refused, driving at speeds more than double the legal limits, disregarding keep left bollards, running a red light, and navigating a roundabout in the wrong direction.
The pursuit ended on River Lane, off Thorpe Road near Crescent Bridge, after McCluskey crashed into a parked car.
He fled the scene, leaving a shoe behind, and was promptly arrested.
McCluskey refused to take alcohol or drug tests and did not provide blood samples for analysis in custody.
Further investigations revealed he lacked insurance for the vehicle.
McCluskey, of East Cobgate, Moulton, near Spalding, admitted to dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, and driving without insurance.
On Monday, 29th June, at Cambridge Crown Court, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years.
He was also banned from driving for three years and ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, along with 15 days of rehabilitation activity.
PC Chris Euerby commented, “McCluskey’s behaviour was appalling. His dangerous driving put other innocent road users at risk, many of which had to take evasive action to prevent a serious collision."
He added, “I’m pleased the pursuit came to an end before anyone was injured and he has now appeared in court to answer for his actions.”
