A husband and wife from Peterborough have been honoured after saving the life of an 81-year-old man who crashed his car into a front garden.

Former police officer Luigi Rossetti, 61, and his wife Tina Digiorgio, 57, rushed to the scene in London Road, Fletton, last December. Mr Rossetti switched off the engine, pulled the trapped driver to safety, and performed CPR for ten minutes with Ms Digiorgio help until emergency crews arrived.

The man was resuscitated and later made a full recovery.

On 17 September, the pair were presented with Royal Humane Society Awards at Cambridgeshire Police headquarters in Huntingdon.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Hutchinson praised their “remarkable courage, compassion and selflessness,” saying their quick actions made the difference between life and death.

Mr Rossetti said: “It was pure luck we were there – anyone would have done the same. It’s nice to be recognised for helping save someone’s life.”
